You are visitor number (per WebCounter) to our site! - please send us your feedback

Last Edited: Tuesday, March 13, 2007 10:15 PM -0600

This is a regularly updated index, organized by subject-headings, of all significant posts to the Abhinavagupta forum on Yahoo!Groups. Significant are those contributions that attempt to make an intelligible case either in themselves or as part of an evolving thread. Members, especially newcomers, consult these listings on a subject of their interest and read the relevant messages, before posing questions or adding further to a specific discussion. Click a subject in the left frame to see a list of links to sub-topics discussed here on the main page; click the topic again to collapse the pull-down submenu. You can have several submenus open at the same time. Click the topics after (sometimes within, to save space) each title to browse relevant threads on that topic from the archives. Place the mouse-cursor over a title to see additional keywords describing the post [to be implemented]. You need to subscribe to the Abhinavagupta forum in order to be able to read these messages (and post any replies).

Following this comprehensive index is a plain chronological listing, from oldest to most recent, of the same postings ordered alphabetically by (first-name of) contributor (click Member-Index in left frame). You may find some messages of interest listed here that do not appear in the main index. Since our views are evolving, some messages may be deleted later at the contributor's request. It is ultimately each contributor's responsibility to ensure that all significant postings are listed here accurately both in his or her own personal section and also under the right sub-topics.

The Javascript code-template for the sticky pull-down categories-menu for the topics was provided by Fredrik Fridsten.

Open queries (unresolved threads)

Please check out the posts listed in this section first to see if you can help resolve the issues raised, which may be simply open queries or even an elaborate thesis that is still crying out for feedback. If you've received a response outside this forum, please share it with the rest of us, especially if other members have already attempted to answer. Responding constructively to one of these posts would be an excellent self-introduction for a new member:

An edited streamlined version of this entire thread is available at "The Hermeneutics of Ganesha: Psychoanalysis, Hindu Wisdom and Transgressive Sacrality" (2004). The primary context within which his iconography was unraveled is the controversy over Paul B. Courtright's book on Ganesha, so check out the section on Orientalism for posts that did not qualify for inclusion here. Some of Sunthar's posts reproduce and (obliquely) comment upon threads among Indologists at RISA-L around this topic. The crooked trunk, pot-belly, love of sweets, embodiment of OMkâra, creating/removing obstacles, etc., are also discussed in Sunthar's postings on the clown (vidûshaka) of the Sanskrit theater. The obsession with 'phallicism' is also covered under psychoanalysis.

psychoanalysis (sexuality, censorship, return of the repressed)

Only posts on the cultural hermeneutics of the 'repressed' are included here - check out the focused discussions on the clown, Ganesha, Shivalinga. The rationale is that both psychoanalysis and transgressive sacrality attempt a systematic decipherment of that which is hidden from consciousness and yet determines individual and collective (not just religious) identity. Other aspects of psychoanalysis are listed under the rubric of psychology.
